今日は新聞の求人欄の読み方についての会話です。

Bob’s job hunting – Series Episode 2
B: Bob
S: Steve
<Bob and Steve are having dinner after work. Bob has brought a newspaper to discuss job ads.>
B: What does Salary DOE mean?
S: DOE means “Depends on experience”.
B: Oh ok. Lots of these ads say EOE at the end. It sounds close to DOE.
S: No no. EOE means that they are an equal opportunity employer. That means they don’t discriminate. Nobody can discriminate anyway, but they have to put that in the ad I guess.
B: Here’s a good one, but I don’t know if I’m eligible.
S: What are the requirements?
B: It says I should have a Master’s degree in Computer Science but I only have a Bachelor’s degree.
S: I think you can swing it, but you work in marketing!
B: Yes, I do. That’s why I want to change jobs. I couldn’t find a computer job after college, so I started working here in marketing to make ends meet. Now I want to get back into a computer-related job and make more money.
S: You should do what you like best I think. But there is a lot of unemployment in the technical sector right now. Are you sure this is the right time to make the change?
B: I won’t quit until I find just the job I want.
S: That’s the best way!
◆シーン19の解説◆
★DOE
Depends on experienceの略で、通常、求人広告の給与の欄に書かれています。（もちろん給与が具体的にかかれている場合もあります。）
日本語だと「給与は経験による」、「経験により優遇」といったところです。
★eligible
（訳）資格がある、適格の
★requirements
（訳）応募資格、条件
★Master’s degree
（訳）修士号
★Bachelor’s degree
（訳）学士号
★swing
swingは本来「振る」、「物を揺らす」の意味ですが、こういう感じで使うと「うまくやってのける」という意味になります。
You can swing it.で、「なんとかなるよ」
★make ends meet
（訳）収支を合わせる、やりくりしてなんとかする
ここでは「何とか食べていく」の意で使われています。
★computer-related
この何々-relatedはビジネスでよく使われ、便利で使える表現です。ここではcomputer-relatedなので、「コンピューター関係の」です。
例：
food-related（食品関係の）
law-related（法律関係の）

ボブのジョブハンティング – シリーズ、エピソード２
B: ボブ
S: スティーブ、ボブの友人で同僚
<ボブとスティーブが仕事帰りに一緒に食事をしています。ボブは求人広告について話そうと、新聞を持ってきました。>
B: 給料DOEっていうのは何のこと？
S: DOEっていうのは、「Depends on experience」（経験による）ってことさ。
B: ああ、なるほど。たくさんの求人広告が最後のところにEOEって書いてある。なんかDOEと似てるよね。
S: 違う違う。EOEはその会社がequal opportunity employerだというわけさ。つまり差別をしませんって意味。差別をしていい会社なんてないわけだけど、とりあえず広告に書かなきゃいけないのかもね。
B: ほら、ここにいいのがある。僕に資格があるかどうか分からないけど。
S: 応募の条件は何だって？
B: コンピューターサイエンスの修士号を持ってることだって。僕は学士号しか持ってないよ。
S: それはなんとかなるよ、きっと。でも、君はマーケティングで働いてるんじゃないか。
B: うん、そうさ。だからこそ転職したいんだよ。大学出た後、コンピューターの仕事が見つからなかったんで、生活のためにうちの会社のマーケティングで働き始めたってわけさ。今、もう一度コンピューター関係に戻って、もっといい給料稼ぎたいんだ。
S: 君が一番好きなことをやるべきだね、ほんと。でもさ、今テクニカル系の業界の失業率はすごいよ。本当に今が職種変更の時でいいわけ？
B: これっていうのが見つかるまで、会社は辞めるつもりないよ。
S: そりゃ、一番いいやり方だ。
